Day-by-Day Itinerary
Please note that the below sample itinerary is not representative of your final itinerary (unless you choose not to personalize it further). The purpose of this itinerary is to provide you with a general idea of what your day might look like. Your actual day-by-day itinerary will be fully customized to suit your trip schedule and specific needs.
Day 1
Get ready for the trip of a lifetime! Today, you’ll board your flight from the United States to Lisbon, Portugal. Upon arrival, you will go through customs and immigration. Make your way to your hotel and check in.
Begin the afternoon with lunch in one of the many cafes to be found though out Lisbon. Afterwards, we recommend adding a sightseeing tour to your itinerary to get to know the city’s most iconic landmarks.
After a day of exploring, consider heading to an authentic Fado house for a performance or take the city tramway to the Estrela district to see the magnificent Estrela Basilica. Finish your night in a local tavern listening to traditional folk music with a beer in hand.
Day 2
Begin your day at the Praça do Comércio, then catch the tram to Belem to see the cloisters of Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you’ve worked up an appetite, be sure to stop for a tasty pastel de nata (custard tart) at the famous ‘Antigua Confeitaria de Belem’. While in Belém, be sure to see one of the major sights of Lisbon, the National Coach Museum or ‘Museu Nacional dos Coches’.
Day 3
Lisbon boasts an amazing location and lies in close proximity to some of Portugal’s magnificent coast and charming villages. We recommend taking a day tour today, which offers you the opportunity to see the best of Sintra and Cascais. You’ll explore the quaint streets of Sintra, established as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and see the famous Pena Palace.
Your guide will then take you to the coast, where you can soak up the sunshine with the locals in Cascais. This is a perfect escape from the city and a great way to see more of Portugal during your getaway.
Day 4
Get up early to explore the Rua Augusta, the perfect place to do some shopping. Head on to the Rossio and the main square of Baixa, where you can admire the paved cobblestones in waved patterns and enjoy pastries or an espresso at a nearby café, as the locals do.
This evening, take the Elevador de Santa Justa to the buzzing Bairro Alto for panoramic views of the city. If you like port, be sure to head to the ‘Solar do Vinho do Porto’ where you can sample over 200 types of port wine. Why not enjoy authentic Portuguese dishes like cataplana (kettle of fish) or clam stew for dinner?
Day 5
You’ve another day today to explore the rest of Lisbon’s sights. If you feel like you’ve seen everything you’d like to, just ask and we can recommend a day trip to add to your itinerary. One of our favorites is the Evora day trip with olive oil tastings. You’ll discover the historic town of Evora and some of its most important monuments such as the Roman Temple and the Saint Francis Church.
Back in Lisbon, head to a local tavern for a final night of music and a great atmosphere.
Day 6
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel today before you catch the train to Porto. Check in to your hotel, then head out to explore the city. Porto is known as Portugal’s second city, and is a hub for arts, entertainment, culture and shopping – it’s a real jewel in the Portuguese crown!
To get a traditional taste of Porto, spend your first day seeing the historic city center and the charming Ribeiara district. Grab a map from the tourist office along the Rua Clube dos Fenianos (or from your hotel) and start exploring Porto.
Day 7
Get up early today and consider adding a sightseeing tour to your itinerary. Whether you like historic castles, delectable port wine or the scenery of the coast, you’ll find something to enjoy in Porto. A hop-on hop-off tour will allow you to see the best of northern Portugal exploring Porto and the nearby beach towns of Vila Nova de Gaia and Matosinhos. There are options to upgrade to a cruise and wine tasting experience, so just let us know if this is something of interest to you.
Day 8
Take in the rest of Porto’s main attractions today. Head to the Avenida Dos Aliados and up to the Câmara Municipal do Porto (City Hall) with its distinctive 70m-high bell tower. Then head to Clérigos Tower situated on the highest point of the old city. Climb the 250 steps of the tower and you’ll be rewarded with 360-degree panoramic views of the city.
For dinner, head to Ribeiara and make your way along the narrow, winding streets lined with restaurants to stop for a meal and a glass of Port.
Day 9
Round off your trip with a short stroll of the city, taking in any sights you may not have already. Afterwards, it’s time to return home. We can arrange a transfer to the airport for you, just let us know if you would like us to do so.
