Known as the City of Lights, Paris is only 1.5 hours away from Brussels and is one of the easiest and most enjoyable day trips from Brussels. Through high-speed trains, you can easily dip in and out of the city with plenty of time at hand to explore Paris.

As you arrive, head straight to the Eifel Tower. Take the elevator or stairs up to experience stunning views of the city. After the Eifel Tower, head to the Champs-Élysées to shop and enjoy the bustling Parisian streets before making your way over to Notre Dame Cathedral. You can easily manage to visit these landmarks in a day.

2. Antwerp

The port town of Antwerp makes for an easy and enjoyable day trip from Brussels. Once there, be sure to spend time wandering Antwerp’s Old Town with its medieval lanes, Renaissance architecture, and the famous Brabo fountain.

If you are into art, you will fall in love with Antwerp’s museums. Head to the renowned Royal Museum of Fine Arts showcasing works by Brueghel, Van Dyck, and other Flemish Old Masters or the majestic Antwerp Cathedral showcasing paintings by the Baroque master Peter Paul Rubens.

Oh, and of course, how can you miss out on the city’s iconic specialty? Head to the Grote Markt to try the crispy Belgian waffles smothered in chocolate and whipped cream. With direct trains taking just 45 minutes to get to Antwerp, exploring Antwerp’s culture, history, and souvenirs couldn’t be simpler.

3. Amsterdam

The journey takes about 2 hours each way, giving you sufficient time to enjoy the canal-woven city of Amsterdam. Start in the city center and stroll by the houses lining the iconic canals before stopping at one of the many cafés flanking the waterways. Then, make your way over to world-famous museums like the Van Gogh Museum or Rijksmuseum to admire classic masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age. Or simply wander around the narrow cobblestone streets and soak up Amsterdam’s one-of-a-kind vibe. Don’t forget to sample some Dutch street food like herring or fries with mayonnaise before hopping back on the train to Brussels.

Located close to Brussels with an efficient transportation system, Amsterdam makes a perfect spot for a day out from Belgium’s capital.

4. Dinant

The small Belgian town of Dinant offers a scenic change from the bustling Brussels. The town is just an hour and a half south of the capital by direct train. Dinant offers an easy escape, arriving upon which you are instantly greeted by the city’s stunning Citadel.

The colorful streets of Dinant’s historic center are perfect for exploration. Stroll along the Meuse River and find yourself captivated by the giant Saxophone Monument which is erected as a tribute to the inventor of the saxophone, born here. And if you get tired, sit by the cafes to savor the unique sweets offered by Dinant. Moreover, if you wish to relax and reflect, hop on a boat cruise along the river to enjoy breathtaking views of the town and its natural surroundings.

5. Durbuy

Durbuy is a small village just an hour’s train ride from Brussels, but it is a great escape from the capital city. Visitors can take the regular intercity trains that run frequently between Brussels and Durbuy throughout the day.

When you arrive, you might be taken aback by just how green everything here is. With its cobblestone streets and medieval architecture, you will feel as if you have traveled centuries back into the past. The majestic Castle of Durbuy, complemented by the lush green landscapes, offers scenic views and a glimpse into Durbuy’s history. For a touch of nature, the banks of the River Ourthe provide the perfect backdrop for a quiet moment of reflection.

Durbuy is an ideal destination for those looking to immerse themselves in history, nature, and local flavors.

6. Luxembourg

As one of the major European capitals closest to Brussels, the city of Luxembourg makes for a popular and worthwhile day trip. Here, you can explore the UNESCO-listed Old Town with miles of underground tunnels and fortifications dating all the way back to the 10th century. For a deeper insight into the history, head to the museums to learn about Luxembourg’s strategic location at the crossroads of Western Europe.

Oh, and don’t miss exploring the lively restaurants and cafés for a taste of Luxembourgish cuisine and culture. If time allows, catch a local bus out to the Luxembourg wine trail that winds its way through the rolling vineyards of the Moselle Valley region. With high-speed trains connecting Brussels to Luxembourg City in just under two hours, you will have plenty of time to explore the city and make it back.

7. Kortrijk

Located in the province of West Flanders, Kortrijk is known for its rich history and vibrant culture. The city’s history dates back to the Roman era, but it flourished in the Middle Ages as a center of the linen and wool industries. The rich past of Kortrijk is evident in its architecture and historic sites scattered throughout the city. One of the most notable landmarks is the Broel Towers, two medieval towers that once formed part of the city’s fortifications and now stand as symbols of Kortrijk’s heritage.

However, the city’s charm extends beyond architecture and history. Kortrijk has a vibrant arts scene, with numerous galleries, theaters, and concert venues all over the city. Moreover, the city also offers an exciting range of dining options for tourists, ranging from traditional Belgian cuisine to international dishes.
