The Historic Town of Amalfi
The historic town of Amalfi is incredibly picturesque – the buildings are mostly white and neutral shades, which makes them pop against the lush greenery, the colorful flora, the bright blue water, and the other vibrant hues of this famed stretch of Italian coastline.
Things to do in Amalfi:
- Relax under the Italian sun on one of the beaches of Amalfi. The sight of the turquoise water meeting the warm sparkling sand is one you’ll be sure to remember.
- See the Amalfi Cathedral. Located in the central portion of the town, this historic cathedral is beautiful and full of interesting architectural details.
- Browse the many shops, restaurants, and cafes of Ruga Nova Mercatorum. This is Amalfi’s main street, and you can buy souvenirs such as pottery made by local artisans.

Sorrento
Sorrento is one of the northernmost cities along the Amalfi Coast and is well known for both its stunning architecture and its production of Limoncello. The landscape is stunning here, as it is throughout the region, and from Sorrento, you can see views of Naples and Vesuvius.
Things to do in Sorrento:
- Sip on limoncello – the Amalfi Coast is famous for producing delicious lemons, and this liquor is made from the zest of this tangy citrus fruit
- Stroll through the beautiful and narrow streets of Old Sorrento. There are many shops and restaurants housed in the colorful and historic structures here.
- Grab a bite to eat and people-watch at Piazza Tasso, one of the central hubs of Sorrento
- Experience the charming port of Marina Grande. You can try some incredible and fresh seafood dishes at the many fine-dining options here.
- Get a look at the Vallone Dei Mulini di Sorrento. This historic old mill is located in a small valley and is hard to spot unless you know exactly where to look.

Ravello
This cliffside town has the best features of the Amalfi Coast – it’s located 265 feet above the sea, filled with incredible history, and dotted with lemon groves. Like many other towns and destinations along the Amalfi Coast, Ravello is an incredibly picturesque place with unparalleled views.
Things to do in Ravello:
- Visit the beautiful gardens at Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo. These two destinations offer different experiences – Villa Cimbrone is full of statues and marble works whereas the Villa Rufolo is far more colorful and vibrant due to the flowers here.
- Take a break at the Piazza Vescovado, the main town square. You can sample some delightful Italian fare and sip on some limoncello or another similarly refreshing drink
- Hike along the legendary Path of Gods. This 7-kilometer long route takes you up to a point where you can get some incredible views of the deep blue water and the structures built into the cliffside – a classic Amalfi Coast sight.

Positano
One of the Amalfi Coasts’ most popular towns to visit, Positano is a stunning retreat. It’s also highly popular for photographers, and you may have seen pictures of the charming town on Instagram. The warm hues of the buildings contrasted with the greens and blues of the natural coastline create an incredible and memorable view. It truly is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy.
Things to Do in Positano:
- Spend time in the small art galleries throughout the city center. These galleries feature works by local artisans.
- Relax at Fornillo Beach. There is the main beach in Positano you can also visit, but Fornillo Beach is slightly more off-the-beaten-path and far less likely to be crowded
- Experience the unique nightlife of Positano. As it gets dark, various lights turn on throughout the town and you can get a magical view of the area. You can also take an evening boat tour to get a beautiful glimpse of the illuminated landscape

Scala
Scala is the oldest town on the Amalfi Coast, with a history dating back to the middle ages. Along with the town of Ravello, Scala was one of the strongholds of the Duchy of Amalfi. This is a wonderful and charming town to visit if you would like to experience the best of what the Amalfi Coast has to offer while also getting a lesson on the incredible history of the region.
Things to do in Scala:
- Visit the Duomo of Scala and marvel at the historic architecture and art inside. The exterior might look unassuming, but once you step inside you’ll surely be impressed at the preserved baroque accents.
- If you are visiting in October, try to attend the annual Chestnut Festival, or the Festa della Castagna. This event has been occurring since 1975 and celebrates the chestnuts that grow naturally and plentifully in Scala. One of the highlights of the festival is the incredible array of chestnut based food – you can try chestnut cakes, roast chestnuts, chestnut jams, and more!
- Stroll through the town and spot some of the remnants of medieval architecture that are still present throughout the area. You can also see some of these ruins as you hike through the region.
- See the ruins of the Ruderi della Basilica di Sant’Eustachio – this romanesque basilica is located atop a cliffside so, in addition to the historic sight, you can also see some beautiful views of the Amalfi Coast
