Table of Contents

Deciding where to go and choosing your honeymoon destinations in Europe can be a fun but intimidating task!  You’re planning for what will literally be a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, and trying to plan an itinerary that has the right mix of relaxing, adventuring, romance, and sightseeing is no small feat. Read on to discover a list of the best honeymoon destinations in Europe, and some recommendations to help you plan your perfect trip.

Greece

Greece is a perfect destination for your honeymoon in Europe for many reasons. There are gorgeous landscapes, delicious food, beautiful sandy beaches, and sparkling turquoise water.

When visiting Greece, it’s a great idea to go during the off season months during the fall and spring months. The sights are still beautiful and the weather is still warm, but there are less tourists and you might even save some money on hotels and other excursions.

Fly into Athens to start your Greek getaway. It’s a city full of history, so you’ll want to put aside some time to see sites such as the Parthenon and the Acropolis. There are also countless places to enjoy the local culture and cuisines, so it’s a great place to recover from traveling before venturing on.

Next, take a ferry to the gorgeous island of Santorini. Known for its iconic white and blue structures, this is a location you can’t miss when you’re in Greece. You can have unique experiences, such as traveling up the island pathways via donkey. Crete is another delightful island retreat. This 160-mile-long island is chock full of history and opportunities to shop for local and traditional items such as olive oil.

Finish off your Greek honeymoon in Mykonos. Whether you are looking for a place to party or a place to relax, you’ll be able to find it in this beachside city.

Italy

Brimming with both romance and history, Italy is an ideal honeymoon destination in Europe. Whether you are looking for stunning coastal towns, historic sites, or delicious food, you will surely find it throughout Italy’s beautiful cities and towns.

Start your Italian honeymoon in Venice. Known to be one of the most romantic cities in the world and a very popular honeymoon destination. There are so many romantic things to do in Venice usually include gondola rides along the canals and waterways, as well as exploring St Mark’s Square arm-in-arm. You can stop at a cute cafe, listen to the charming musicians who will serenade you, and enjoy a glass of wine.

Next, head to the sparkling blue water of Italy’s Lake Region, and stay at the famed Grand Tremezzo Hotel or other lakeside hotels in Lake Como. This region is a great destination for history lovers and for those who want a beautiful space to unwind for a few days.

Continue your Italian honeymoon in Rome, the nation’s capital and one of the most famous and historic cities in the world. Visit iconic sites such as the Trevi Fountain or the Colosseum, and indulge in gelato or coffee.

Next, head to the Amalfi Coast. This beautiful region features historic structures built into the rocky coast, perched over the Mediterranean Sea. There are beautiful hiking trails and the views of the rocky coast tinged with greenery and beautiful flowers in a variety of hues. If you have an extra day to spare, try to fit in a trip to Naples, the birthplace of pizza!

France

When thinking about a list of the most romantic countries in the world, France definitely tops the list.

Start your trip off in Paris, the famed City of Love. You’ll want to spend time on more traditional tourist destinations, such as visiting the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Louvre. You can experience some of the world’s best shopping along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, or experience the historic grandeur of Versailles.

To the north of Paris, you can visit Normandy’s peaceful beaches and beautiful towns. This geographic and cultural region. A unique place to visit in Normandy is Le Mont-Saint-Michel, a tidal island with thousands of years of history. It’s also one of the most visited places in France.

Next, head south to the Loire Valley. This region is known as the Garden of France due to the number of vineyards and other crops the region produces. This is also a great destination for history lovers – there are several distinct examples of historic architecture such as the Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, and the central part of the valley has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Finish off your trip in the famed wine region of Bordeaux. Sample some of the world’s best wine at any of the area’s beautiful vineyards, or experience the wine culture by visiting La Cite du Vin, a unique wine museum that has interactive exhibits and a variety of wine classes and experiences that you can take while experiencing a beautiful view. You can pair your wine with some delicious food, such as oysters from Arcachon Bay.

Bordeaux also has an international airport, so you can leave from that area rather than traveling all the way back to France via car or train.

The United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is a fantastic honeymoon destination, full of places that are brimming with history and culture. Even though you may associate the UK with cloudy skies, if you visit in the fall or spring you have a chance of avoiding the rainy days.

Start your trip in London, England, and experience its historic charm. You can taste traditional pub fare such as fish and chips, walk through Hyde Park, or visit the Tower of London. No matter what your hobbies or interests are, you’ll find something for you in London.

Next, head up to The Cotswolds. This region was officially designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1966, and if you visit you’ll see why.  Known for its historic towns and stone-built villages, this area is the perfect place to retreat to after the hustle and bustle of the city. The storybook charm of these picturesque villages and towns create a perfect romantic retreat.

Finish off your trip in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Walk through the historic Edinburgh Old Town and immerse yourself in the historic architecture. You can also spend a day touring Edinburgh Castle and see Scotland’s Crown Jewels. If you’re a fan of whiskey, you won’t want to miss one of the tours or tastings that the city offers.

Spain

Spain is amongst one of the best honeymoon destinations in Europe. Defined by beautiful landscapes and scenery, sparkling beaches, appetizing food, and incredible culture, Spain offers choices that make it a perfect destination for everyone.

Start your trip with a few days in Barcelona, a city rich in history and culture. You can spend time relaxing in the morning and experience the city’s sidewalk cafes and museums in the afternoon.

Next, venture to the beautiful Valencia. The city has an average of 217 sunny days annually, and one highlight is how evident the local culture and traditions are throughout the city. The Central Market is one of the oldest in Europe, and gives you a taste of what life in Valencia is, and was throughout history.

Madrid is the capital of Spain, and you’ll want to visit if you’re interested in experiencing the nightlife. The city also features beautiful gardens, parks, and plazas which are perfect places to spend time together as a newlywed couple.

End your trip in the Basque resort town of San Sebastian, and it’s a famed honeymoon destination for a reason! Not only does the city feature incredible food and culture, but it’s situated in an absolutely beautiful area! The view of the boats swaying on the turquoise water bordered by the glittering sand is unbelievable.
