10 of The Best Things to Do in Copenhagen You Will Love

Table of Contents

Home to magnificent architecture and breathtaking sights, Copenhagen is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Copenhagen isn’t a stranger to tourists; it’s one of the most popular destinations in Denmark. And yet, it still retains its charm, and for good reason; Copenhagen has a lot to offer, especially when you’re hoping for a good trip. So we’re sharing the best things to do in Copenhagen:

1. Freetown Christiania

Freetown Christiania is a small and humble neighborhood in Copenhagen. Once a squatted military base, the neighborhood is now an independent community with its flag. While Freetown Christiania is a pretty fun visit for history lovers, let’s talk about why it’s one of the best things to do in Copenhagen. The neighborhood is a top tourist spot yet never crowded, so you’re free to explore the destination at your pace without worrying about tourist footfall. It also hosts some of the country’s best Christmas markets, so you can stroll romantic streets and feast on fantastic food if you visit during the season. Don’t forget to visit ALIS Wonderland skating park.

2. Cisternerne, Frederiksberg

A contemporary art exhibition space, Cisternerne isn’t your ordinary museum; it lies underground, so you’re able to explore art in one of the few underground museums in the world. Its location also gives Cisternerne a sense of isolation, perfect for people who genuinely want to avoid tourist footfall. Cisternerne’s installations are incredibly diverse and stunning, so you’ll get plenty of things to post on your Instagram. But Cisternerne is considered one of the best things to do in Copenhagen because of the art itself; it’s incredibly quirky and unusual, so it becomes a breath of fresh air for art lovers.

3. Nyhavn Canal Tour

You can’t miss the Nyhavn Canal tour if you genuinely want to explore Denmark’s beauty. The Nyhavn Canal isn’t only one of Denmark’s most picturesque destinations in Denmark, but it’s also lined with colorful boathouses and has a rich history (it was a port once!). This means a canal tour will teach you about the intricacies of Copenhagen in a way that even history books won’t cover. Besides, cruising along the canal, passing the vibrant boats, and feasting on some fresh seafood make Nyhavn’s canal tour one of the best things to do in Copenhagen.

4. Østerport Train and Kongens Nytorv

If you’re visiting briefly and want to cram all of Copenhagen’s beauty in one trip, we recommend taking the train to Østerport. The train ride is incredibly picturesque since you’ll pass colorful historic buildings, giving a nostalgic feel. But that’s not your final destination; once you get off at Østerport, walk to Kongens Nytorv, a beautiful plaza lined with lush green grass and vibrant roses, painting a picture that’ll shame even the best painters. It’s truly one of Copenhagen’s finest and the best things to do.

5. Torvehallerne

If you’re a sucker for home-cooked meals and don’t want to miss your hobby even on vacation, then hit up Torvehallerne. Torvehallerne is a fresh food market offering some of Denmark’s finest and healthiest produce. And while it’s certainly an unusual way to explore the city, we’ll explain why it’s one of the best things to do in Copenhagen: the culture and the people. Trust us, just exploring the market, interacting with the locals, and listening to the open-air cafes belting live songs is a fun trip on its own.

6. The Round Tower, Copenhagen City view

If you’re up for a history lesson that comes with a stunning view, head up to the Round Tower. This tower dates back to the 17th century and was designed by King Christian IV of Denmark himself. It might look a bit sober from the outside, but once you go for an indoor tour, you’ll learn some fascinating things about 17th-century architecture. Once you’ve had your fair share of history, head up to the equestrian staircase, which will lead to the top. From there, you’ll get an eagle-eye view of the entire city, as if Copenhagen folded right before you.

7. Christiansborg Palace

After the first Christiansborg Palace succumbed to a tragic fire in 1790, the second Christiansborg Palace was constructed to be a comfortable residence of the then-Danish Monarch. Now, you might think we’re being historical. Still, there’s a reason the Christiansborg Palace makes the list of the best things to do in Copenhagen: its history and purpose make it one of the most luxurious palaces, designed to wow your inner royalty. The Christiansborg Palace also offers a breathtaking view of the sprawling city, so you’ll get much more than you asked for (but in a good way)

8. Amarminoen Hike

Now, here’s one activity built for those nature lovers who don’t mind an extra adrenaline hike- Amarminoen is a stunning hiking area stretching about 27 km, lined with trees, a nature reserve, and touches on a few small neighborhoods, too. While the hike itself is incredibly stunning, the best part about the Amarminoen hike is the starting and finish point: Dragør. This colorful fishing village gives you some of the city’s best views, a serene landscape, and a culinary experience that’ll leave you gasping for more.

9. Dyrehaven Deer Park

Chanel your inner Disney princess by visiting the Dyrehaven, which literally means ‘the deer park.’ This nature resort isn’t just a place to spot deer; it’s home to some of the most lush and stunning forests in Copenhagen, so you’ll truly get the chance to connect with Mother Nature. Dyrehaven Deer Park is a popular destination for joggers and hikers, but we recommend getting a horseback ride so you can explore the park feeling like a true animal enthusiast. It’s also worth hitting up the nearby theme park, which is a hit for families.

10. Hit the cafes

How could we talk about the best things to do in Copenhagen and not mention the food? Danish pastries are popular worldwide, so we’ve constructed a short itinerary to swoon every foodie. Cafe Intime is a fun cocktail bar that has been delighting customers since 1922, so you know you’re getting your money’s worth.  Risteriet is your top place when you’re looking for a snug cup of joe, especially with those fresh Danish pastries to accompany. Next comes the Lille Bakery, one of the few in the area that serves Danish cuisine made with organic ingredients. And if you’re truly looking for the best things to do in Copenhagen, visit Schønnemann for smørrebrød, the infamous open-faced sandwich.
